They were disillusioned by "big hotels, fine roads and motor cars".
Also, at the time women were encouraged to wear blouses and some of the "exotic" nature of Bali disappeared.
80 odd years later it's still going.
The attractions are different now, but nevertheless still there.
It will be many years more yet before the doomsday sayers of 80 years ago are proved to be correct.
