Let's face it, this sort of thing can, and does happen anywhere every day of the week.
Indeed, you can stay home and similar things can happen to you.
Of course, it would be nice to see a better response from the authorities, but even then if your home is broken into it is not an uncommon response for the police to just "record the fact" simply for insurance purposes.
It's the way of the world and the old adage of just travelling or living aware stands true no matter where you are.
