I have been going to Ubud since 1986. The footpaths now are similar to at they were then. However we used to walk in the road. Now there is so much traffic that isn't possible any more. Scooters come down the Moneky Forest Road in the opposite direction, so it isn't possible to safely step into the road. So you have to stick to the footpaths...horrendous as they are.
