If you're doing visa on board with Garuda from Sydney, you will only need to wait for your bags. If your son is lining up for his visa on arrival, you could well have 2 or 3 hours to wait, not just the hour and half time between arrivals.
There are places outside the terminal building, but I don't think there's anywhere inside to wait.
