I overstayed in Sulawesi some years ago (before VoA). I had been turned back trying to cross overland (over water, by ferry, actually) from Tarakan to Tawau, because I wasn't a local, just missed a flight and found the next flight cancelled, due to a public holiday. My visa expired the next day and the next flight was the following day. I had scant cash, which I couldn't replenish til I got to Malaysia, so I couldn't offer a "fee". Imigrasi said "I think you are going to jail", took my passport and instructed me to meet him at the airport the next day. After a sleepless night, I arived at the airport to find an honour guard of the entire local Imigrasi department waiting to make sure I left! I now double check my dates, don't trust timetables and ensure I have adequate cash
