Like you, in the past I have always liked to staying somewhere with the Bali feel but not always possible or not cost effective. Earlier this year I spent a few nights about 1 minute walk from Kuta Beach Club, down a Gang, Ozz Hotel, not traditionally Balinese but about $35 per night (2 adults, breakfast included), also stayed a couple of nights in Bliss Surfer, Legian (off Jalan Legian, close to Jalan Padma cnr), same cost per night including breakfast for 2 adults. Both very clean, central to everything you need, great facilities, staff and quiet. Hoping this helps
