i asked about this when i left oz back in may at book in counter at jet star just recently and was told they would need to see bank statement showing funds then i could board plane and was told if worse came to worse on bali arrival would have to purchase ticket proof of depature .I think ,for sure it depends on who you are talking too,as when i went through immigration in bali i asked if i would be allowed in on one way ticket ,very helpfull man said would be ok .Have heard a few cases of people going one way with no problems and others who had to purchase fully refundable tickets ,then on arrival getting refund.Also could depend on if you look like you are type who is not likely to leave again and maybe take up illegal work in the country of arrival.I intend to try and go one way next year as i staying 6 months and it would be handy in case i want to return early ,just look for cheap one way from bali when sales are on .HOPE this helps
