As a resident of the Bukit for the past 12 months, we can only support all that you've said. You won't ever see the real Bali from Jl 66 and Jl Legian.
We've broken into twice in the last 8 weeks. Now live in uncertain times as to when - not "if" we'll be broken into again, and what the outcome of that will be if we're home when They come calling again.
Don't get me wrong, we love the mix of Indonesians in our village and embrace their lifestyle, customs (aka ceremonies) and warm friendships we've made. We live in a village on the Bukit, and have to get our water via a"Tanke" (tanker) every 10-12 days and get 9,000 litres dropped. We're fortunate, in that we can afford to buy our water. Many in the village don't have running water, and many can't afford to have "Pumpa" (aka water well). Some don't have Listrik (electricity) either - even if they had it many can't afford to buy electricity. It's frustrating that on our Jalan, that Government water stops 300 metres from us in each direction. When it will be connected past our rumah - "about 8-10 years". We've been "advised" that IF we wanted to make a donation, we could get the water connected within 2 months. Thanks, but we'll wait.
Keep up your great work on the side of the mountain.
Sorry we missed you in April. Would like to catch up with you both in September. ;-)
