I had proper gel overlays for around 2 years and they did no damage at all to my nails. I have soft nails already, which is why I had the gels to begin with.
I've started getting gel colour/shellac recently. Have had them for around 6 weeks and my nails have stopped peeling and feel stronger with the polish on. I'll see how they fare long term, but I did research online before starting and never read anything about them making nails brittle or soft.
Mine couldn't get any softer than they are to begin with!
