Got a driver from that hotel that spoke good english to take me to borrobodur and prambuten temples (spelling???) also used him another day to travel around to some other sites eg pottery places, beach area. Lots of locals (muslim religion) wearingclothing in the water, buggies and horses on the beach... Different but interesting.
Spend 4 days around Yogya all up, flew from Bali return, with Lion Air. Very cheap. Booked my flight when in Bali and went online in Bali to book the hotel through Booking.com. I went solo, a woman in my 50's. It was safe. Lots of cultural things in centre of yogya. Even at night plenty happening in the centre of town eg shops open, cultural dances etc I felt safe. Took the bicycle bemos around town at night about $1,Rp 10 000, although I paid them more as the rider had to pedal me, a lot heavier than them. LOL! Note: lot more traditional than Bali so not really a lot of restuarants. I ate at the hotel, or off street stalls. A few cafes in the shopping centre. Not a lot of foreigners around when I went. The temples are amazing. Take lots of photos. Worth going.
