I paid for the upgrade to get the front row seat and was put one row behind. The people who had booked the two front row seats beside me were also shafted to the row behind.
Our 3 seats were given to 3 other people who rocked up on the day without prebooking and without paying for up front seats. They had no kids and no special needs so I really don't see a valid reason for it.
Jetstar's response to my complaint was that they have to "ensure that the aircraft load is safely distributed". I'm not sure that one row makes any sort of difference to load distribution, especially when people are up and walking about during the whole flight.
The only reason I paid for the upgrade to up front seating was because the front row was available and I wouldn't have anyone seated in front of me. In the end, I'd have been no worse off saving my $25 each way and sitting another 5 rows back in the regular (not "up front") seats.
