on what you want in a holiday. If you just want to get drunk & buy Bintang t-shirt Kuta is the place. If not Hire a car & buy a indonesian GPS, the east coast of bali is great, beautiful to look at & no traffic. Lots of places to stay & just pull into some of the places with signs that say accommodation or dive resort, there are some beautiful places right on the water that are better then anything in the south. When you are finished driving across the top of bali, catch a ferry to Java(make sure you have you international licence) its about 1.5km not far at all. when you get off the ferry turn left & head to Banyuwangi, on the left some great hotels over looking Bali(Rp3-400,000 per night) from there you can go anywhere south to surf, west to the mountains(Jember) and northwest to surabaya(Sidoarjo is were the bags are packed & sent to Bali for 5x the price) or the mud flow something you would not believe.
