When my daughter used to get braids I would make her take them out either in the pool in Bali or at home. I would just cut the elastic bands and let her go for a swim, the water would unravel the braids with no effort on my part at all. If a pool isn't an option then I agree with the other post, put heaps of conditioner on the braids and hop in the shower or bath and let the water loosen them.
Also grateful that those days are behind me!!
