In the olden days, Ansett, Qantas and Garuda had lounges in the old terminal which is why there were three. When Ansett went belly-up, someone obviously made the decision to make some money out of the unused lounge and the others followed suit.
It doesn't sound like they'll be doing the same thing in the new terminal - no Ansett, no Qantas (Jetstar instead) and just Garuda as the full-service so only one lounge.
