If you do choose the option of a Load & Go card be careful which one you buy. The rules for use changed last October (the impending changes weren't pointed out to me by AusPost staff when I bought mine a week before they came into effect). I can't remember the specifics but one of them only allows cash withdrawals from ATM's of $200 or $250 per week. The other allows unlimited withdrawals but you must show ID to get it (not really a problem for most). It apparently has something to do with money laundering. You can only upload up to $999 at a time onto the card.
I agree that if you have an ATM card you use at home that it the best option for the reasons Terrymacasie stated. The only advantage of a Load & Go card is that it is anonymous. If you lose it, it doesn't show your name and account number and anyone trying to use it can only spend what's on the card.
