We were offered a blessing by a priest in a tiny village temple in north Bali. We were properly dressed (udeng for husband, sarongs, sashes, respectful white shirt, shoulders covered). One of the temple attendents took us to the mat in front of the altar and gestured for us to kneel, we were given a flower to hold and prayed to the altar. The priest came and scattered holy water on us, took the flowers and placed them behind our ears and then pressed rice to our foreheads.

It was a wonderful and moving experience, not one that we had asked for, but hopefully it will be repeated at some time.

Just a note for the opening poster - if you go to Tirta Empul, take a clean water container (or you can buy them there), and ask a local person to fill it with the holy water which comes out of the spouts into the bathing prification pool. Treat the water with great respect, carry it on the seat of the car, never put it on the floor. Give it to staff at your hotel, they will be very grateful as they can use it as part of their offering ritual.
