I guess it can really be as spicy as you like if you add extra sambal. I found flavour-wise it was head and shoulders above restaurant nasi goreng and still had some warmth. He did add a fair bit more chilli for the locals after taking my portion out of the mix. I'm sure they'd be happy enough for you to sample a bit and see if you want it hotter.
There is a night market in Kuta as well that is worth a visit for cheap and tasty food. It's located basically behind Supernova on Jl Blambangan. Taxis should know it as "Pasar Senggol Kuta" but I have encountered some who didn't know it when getting in a taxi from Legian.
If your girlfriend is having trouble with mosquitos, you can pick up the local repellant quite cheaply at any mini mart or circle K. Soffel or Autan both work well for me and I'm a mozzie-magnet. They smell nice too :)
