I just walk into the water off the beach, but I go in where the boats are dragged up, in front of vacant land right next door as there is less coral there, less risk of scratching myself or damaging coral. There are lots of little and big fish near the shore, but a little way out into the sea you will find the sea bed drops and you don't see many there. Directly out from the hotel under the water there is a mound like an upturned basin several metres high, and about a metre below the sea surface, which is near the drop to deeper waters....fascinating. I ask the staff for some cooked rice and put it in a plastic bag or drink bottle (which I bring back in with me) and shake little handfuls into the water and the fish come to eat it - great fun. I just wear a mask, snorkel and flippers, lots of sunblock, light shirt over my swimsuit to protect from sun, and I lie on an inflatable ring so I can paddle around for ages without getting tired. The hotel has a few flippers, masks and snorkels you can hire for a small fee but I just take my own with me each year.
