Hi, I've been selling and supporting GPS car navigation in Bali for couple years now.

AFAIK, Garmin uses their own map source per 2010 since Teleatlas who provides map for most GPS manufacturer was bought by TomTom based in Netherlands. So particularly for Garmin, you need to contact Garmin and buy map source by credit card on their website.

For sure, each brand sells their unit by region. You need to buy additional map database according to your trip plan. Say you bought one in Australia, you need to buy a map for SEA (South East Asia) to use it in Bali (Indonesia) and Singapore or Malaysia. Map source is quite expensive so it is wise to choose GPS brand and model they offer looking at your need.

For those who don't quite want to spend pricy map source by its own manufacturer, try use free-map source provided mostly by local community of its country. Need lots of effort to install it though adjusting to screen size and brand also model of GPS. I once successfully installed a Canadian-Garmin Nuvi with local Indonesia map.

My suggestion is to buy TomTom GPS World edition if you plan to go to different country / continents. Otherwise buy a basic TomTom GPS for SEA.
All models available at my office.
