Basically, you are responsible for what happens in front of you, not behind. So its not about checking your mirrors at all. Throw the defensive driving out the window and drive assertively not aggressively.
You can believe the Indonesian drivers have magical super driving powers if you want to but, most Australian drivers, especially if they are country drivers, have chalked up more driving hours of expertise in more dangerous and complicated driving conditions than any Balinese driver will ever have, excepting those tanker drivers of course. For most adults, those skills are transferable so why not put your big boy shorts on and give it a try?
