The Travel Itinerary (which is sent to your email via online booking) is your ticket and contains your booking reference number and the details of your flight and any add-on's you have purchased. You can view, change or update your confirmed booking through Manage My Booking. ( From AA website )
You can do a check in from home prior to going to the airport which saves time and then you just give them the paper with it on.
Same applies for return journey which you can also do from home.
