while I am not an expert on Indonesian diet, my observation is that back in the early 90's, of the young families that I knew, their diet was as you say, small quantities of rice(fried or otherwise), fish, chicken, pork, fruit, vegetable etc, but often. I used to marvel at the waist size of some of the girls, they were tiny!
Now, what I see, 25 years later, are their children, who are eating miles of mie (noodles), plus most of the other good stuff mentioned before. But, they are also eating Maccas, KFC, packets of chips, ice cream, soft drinks etc and they are chubby.
Maybe it is simply the economic factor.
