I always go to the Denpasar Police station and get a Balinese tourist license as soon as we arrive. If you have an international license then you can save yourself a few hours and skip this...
We have used Defence Health for our travel insurance for years as they cover you in a vehicle as long as you have a valid license to operate the vehicle in that country.
I have had many discussions with them over the phone clarifying that it is a 'tourist license' and they have assured me that we are covered.
Have yet to have to call on them but at least I don't have to worry about this exact situation happening to us.
In saying this, no doubt the police would try to impose a 'fine' of some description anyway....
The things I tell any of our friends that want to hire a bike in Bali are;
- Always carry your license
- Try to travel at the same speed as the rest of the traffic (travelling slower can be just as dangerous as travelling faster)
- Catch a taxi if you plan on or have had a few 'refreshments'.
- Spend the $30 and go and buy a proper helmet.

90% of accidents I see that involve tourists happen when they are drunk or riding too fast/being stupid. There are always times when it is not your fault and that is when having the correct insurance is imperative.

Riding a bike in Bali is a fantastic way to get around if you do it right. Get the right travel insurance, get a license and enjoy.
