Speaking from years of experience, even in our society mental health is a minefield, and unless one has walked the walk, not always very well understood. It is not, as some people imagine, just a matter of "taking a pill" or "pull yourself together', or "have counselling". Depression can also be one facet of other complex disorders, and for the person and family can be a very lonely place to be. I do most sincerely wish this family the very best outcome .. even when they get home, and that is where I believe they need to be.
