The only laneway (shortcut) to the beach I know of is left of the CPM where Margaret's Laundry is down, it is opposite the underground carpark of the new Magani Hotel. If you walk to the end turn right past some
small shops you will come out onto Melasti Street, behind Pullman's (a huge complex on the corner)and it's a short walk to the beach from there. This way will not take you past the markets and Uncle Norm's etc on Melasti.
A note of interest is that the end of The Stones Hotel runs right along the old part of the CPM and goes towards the beach. You can see how big it is from the CPM rooftop bar, there maybe a way you could walk through to get where you want.
