I don't really agree with staying away from South Kuta because if you have only been away for three years the only change we have seen is a couple more hotels. The footpaths have been upgraded and very good to walk on and if using a wheel chair (not suggesting you are) it is very good for it as well. When you make friends in Bali they stay the same no matter how long you have been away. We are going again in Sept and I know some have been there more than us but this is our 30 th trip. The people are the same as we find so if you like the Kuta area go for it no different than other areas in Bali.
