We have done it easily in the past on $100 a day with two teenage kids. We hire a car and at the time they were 150,000rp but the exchange rate was a lot lower at around 6,500 to 7000rp to the dollar. We have driven all around Bali and just got accommodation as we went, sometimes we would check out a lot of hotels until we found one at the right price and the right facilities. We have also found some absolute beauties for fantastic prices. We usually pay 100,000 a room and get two rooms or a family type room for 200,000.

We spent a lot of time on Nusa Lembongan and we loved it because it's a beautiful island and no shopping or other tourist traps except for snorkeling and hiring bikes. We stayed and still do at Puri Nusa. They have a family bungalow with 5 single beds, double story with one basic bathroom with flush loo and cold shower. You would get that for 150,000 a night depending on demand at the hotel at the time.

We eat a lot of lunches at warungs and that helps with family budgets.

So long as you don't want to shop you could do it on $1700. Just remember to put the 150,000 rp departure tax in your passports at the beginning of the trip, it can easily be overlooked when you are on a budget!
