Don't exchange your money before you go - it reads to me as if that's what you're planning on doing. You'll lose a good 10% of your spending money if you do that.

If you absolutely must change some before you leave home, just change $50 or $100. Better still, just change it at the airport when you arrive in Bali. It will be a slightly lower rate than on the street but nowhere near as bad as what you will get at home.

When you're in Bali, smaller denominations are handy for taxi rides and for entry to temples etc that you might visit. I always find it hard to hang onto enough small money in Bali as everyone claims to have no change for bigger notes. When changing money in Bali though, opt for 50K notes where possible and avoid anyone who tries to make up large amounts with smaller denominations.
