I have been a lurker here for a while and set off to Bali with heaps of information I have gleaned from various web sites.
My mother in law (MIL)and I booked a two bedroom villa for $120 in the southern end of Sanur. We reasoned that while it was away from the centre of action we would not be spending more than $20 a day on taxis so it made for a good deal for me, my husband, his parents and our 15 year old son.
We compliled a list of places to eat and things to see. All of this gathered from JBR's and general information written on forums.
We had spent time in Kuta and Legian but never in Sanur. My father in law(FIL) has had no interest in going to Bali at all. He had agreed to finally come with us. About a week before our departure FIL finally showed a bit of interest and looked over my shoulder at the email bookings. His comment was 'the guy you are writing to, I went to school with somone of the same name'.
So dutifully I emailed the villa owner and asked if he happened to know Andrew Mc**** from their school days in Merredin in Western Australia. With in 20 minutes we had an email back stating 'Tell Andrew he is still a Scottish pr**k.'
Suddenly FIL was excited. His whole slant on Bali changed. He was ready to go. He mentioned that his old mate was a bit of a wild child. My husband calmed me down by mentioning that FIL was nearly 60 so his mate would be the around the same age.
We flew into Bali with no problems and were greeted at the airport by the driver holding a placard 'The Scottish Pr**k and His Lovely Family'. I am not too sure if this is the traditional Balinese greeting but FIL loved it.
Next instalment, impressions of Sanur.
