I love Sanur. Just the right balance of laid back living with good restaurants etc. Shops are fine if you know what you are looking for. Seafront ideal for young kids as protected by the reef so no heavy sea or rips (most of the time). Just sitting at a seafront cafe with a good meal and a beer or two is my preferred lifestyle. After staying in the Kuta strip seems like heaven.
Ubud also good shops, restaurants, walks through paddy fields etc., or you can just laze by a pool. Only main problem with Ubud is that if you are too far out of the town may be a lengthy hike to get anywhere (not many taxis around).
I like both places...matter of your particular requirements.
