I am in the car on a daily basis for work and regularly get stopped in road blocks especially heading to Ubud. Just be polite, hand over you licence and rego paper and once all cleared you will be fine to go.
They now have big signs in most police booths that a bribe can result in jail for both the police and person paying so I very much doubt the police will be asking for money. Just remeber not to go over the white line when you stop at traffic lights :)
