I went to Sabah to see them. I went with a friend who is originally from Malaysia. She booked everything very late with a local travel agent. MUCH cheaper than we would have paid booking from Sydney, but the thing that might interest you is that she said people from that part of the world don't book ahead in the way that we are used to doing. So maybe you can wing it. Maybe someone can suggest a local (Indonesian) travel agent you could contact.
