by Miguel Covarrubias is regarded by some as the best documentation of Bali Life around the early 1900s.
Another interesting book, although perhaps somewhat fanciful is K'Tut Tantri - A Revolt in Paradise.
The woman writer, a Scot who adopted Balinese life, certainly was highly regarded by Indonesian Authorities, certainly worked with (and against) the Kokes in building the first Kuta beachside hotel and was regarded as a "Tokyo Rose" during the Japanese occupation working for the Indonesians.....but perhaps even as a double spy.
All interesting stuff if you like that sort of thing.
