We have visited Amed a few times and we were there in January 2011. There is not too much beach to speak of in Amed, it's mainly rocky. I've read that Lipah is the best sandy beach but haven't visited it myself. January is wet season and we had quite a lot of rain (which was not a problem for us)
Amed is very very quiet but is a lovely relaxing place just to chill out. There are a couple of mini marts but no real shopping. It is very spread out - basically one long windy road with accommodation/restuarants dotted along it. The views are spectacular. You can snorkle off the beach or head up to Tulamben for the day to go diving (you can organise this through your accommodation in Amed). We didn't dive in January, only snorkled and the visibility was fine the day we went.
It's a great little place to to relax, enjoy the views, eat at some the little resturants etc...
