I've been stopped a few times when I have had wrapped presents in my hand luggage - last time it was gifts to me and my wife so I had no idea what they were. They just took them to the X-ray - checked them over that way and handed back.
No need to unwrap unless it looks suspicious on the X-ray.
The reason they stopped me though was because I had a knife in my bag :-O ... That'll teach me to check my bag before using it as hand luggage. They laughed it off - and let me keep the knife!
