We have always paid by credit card and had complimentary travel insurance. Two days before a planned trip my father in law passed away. We received full refund (less $200) admin/excess etc. Brother in law was in Bali and had to return home. He was compensated from the same insurance company.
I believe that they are worth while, but it applies to only the immediate family ie husband and wife if on the same credit card. It did not cover our children as they were over 25 years old. This was some time ago so I assume that it is still the same.
