I have done this with about 5 separate group of people who would not normally come to Bali - We stay in Benoa at the Novotel, like Nusa Dua but not expensive. Locals don't bother you on the beach but are there if you want to chat or purchase. The Novotel is low rise Balinese decor. you can taxi into seminyak or kuta or legian at night for some action and have the peace and quiet of Benoa during the day.
