Much cheaper to get a return ticket for the time frame I checked out (not nearly as cheap as yours - well done). A bit of time spent on the comp comparing flights is always worth the effort. With AA it's usually cheaper to book separate flights, but I do always check all airlines & compare one ways & returns.
