You are supposed to have a return ticket & airline check-in staff are supposed to check that you have one. Sometimes or often they don't check.
You could always buy a full price, refundable ticket on AA or a different airline from, say Medan to KL or Singapore or wherever to show then cancel it & get a refund (you'll lose cc fees).
Actually, I don't know why you'd bother buying a ticket from AA in Bali - usually MUCH cheaper to buy a Bali - Perth flight online well before you go. With AA our experience is that the closer you book to your flight time, the more expensive.
