Best thing that ever happened to Bali was to rid the street of the pesky and at times aggressive hawkers. Years ago they were generally young, funny well mannered youths, but over time greed crept in and they become frightening especially in the narrow streets where they were able to block your path.
I intereact a lot with the hawkers on the beach and generally find them to be very similar to the street hawkers of old (good). Lets hope greed does rear its ugly head.
