Put Bali sim in a phone and dial 888 and it will give the credit expiry. Yes works in Australia.
I top mine up on the internet between visits and then have plenty of credit when I arrive.
I have three sims and put credit on them in Bali 5th of August. Expiry is 28/10/12. I think you have let them lapse too long but you can try to top them up on http://www.top2mob.com/en/top-up-mobile.php and it will either accept it or refuse. I registered on this site and it took a little while but once set up is easy.
You can also purchase those scratchy cards bring them home and top up days before expiry in Aust. You just have to put the sim in and when you arrive switch on your phone and you are set. Friends already know your number. Simpati is linked to Optus in Aust so you can get a txt in Aust.
