If you're keen to try some local food and want to know it's ok then exit the Jayakarta from the beach entrance, turn right and walk along the beach road until you get to a restaurant called the Zanzibar. Next to the Zanzibar there is a small warung that serves local food. The food is behind glass so you can choose what you want.

It's cheap and tasty. I've eaten there many, many times (have lunch there nearly every day) and never had a problem. The people who work there will tell you what the food is and whether it's spicy or not. You can also let them know how much you want.

When you are going to that warung you will pass a number of restaurants like the Seaside, Blue Ocean, Reastaurant Italianne, Lanai and Zanzibar. All these places sell good food (including local dishes like Nasi Goreng and sate's) but are more expensive. You could also include another place called Yut'z as a place for good but more expensive food. To find Yut'z, leave the Jayakarta via the main entrance, turn right and then turn left at the first street (Werkudara) and walk about 100m up the road. Yut'z is on the left side of the road. You may notice as you walk up Jl Werkudata that there is a place on the right called Sawasdeeka. It's a Thai restaurant with good food and a unique seating arrangement of raised benches in wooden huts.

Another place to try is called Warung Murah. Leave the Jayakarta via the main entrance, turn left and follow the road to a T intersection. That road is called Double Six. Turn left and about 30m on the right side of the road is Warung Murah. It's not as cheap and the other place I've mentioned but the food is Indonesian and in bain maries so again you can choose what you want.

Just before you get to the intersection I mentioned above there is a place on the right side of the road called Warung Asia set off the road. It's also another place to try.

A bit further away are some other local food places that are safe to eat at. Leave the Jayakarta via the main entrance and turn right. Follow the road till you get to a hotel called the All Seasons. Turn left there and follow the gang (small road) alongside the All Seasons until you reach the corner of the hotel. Turn right and follow the gang when it veers left and the about 50m up the gang there is a place called Warung Kartini which again has very good local food. I know it sounds hard to find but it's worth it.

If you continued to follow the road (Padma Utara) past All Seasons you will eventually find a place on your left called Warung Yogya which has good local food also.

Follow Padma Utara to the next T intersection which is Jalan Padma. Turn left and follow Padma St until you get to the intersection with Jalan (street) Legian. Turn left and three or four shops along on the left side of the street is another local warung (eating place) that is popular with both locals and tourists.

You're spoilt for choice staying at the Jayakarta for places to eat. There are many more eateries nearby which some people rave about.

Bon appétit
