.. I have gone back to using them instead of a travel/debit card & a credit card (I always take both my debit & credit card for emergencies). I take about a third or so of my $ in cash. If cash is stolen it is gone forever - TCs can be replaced.
TCs are free from Aust Post. Sure you need your passport to exchange but after the first transaction it hasn't been needed (in any case I always carry a photocopy of my passport with me). The rate is a cent or 2 less than cash per transaction. But you avoid ATM & other bank fees & you can change as much as you want - not limited by the ATM limit. Avoid using credit cards but if you do notify your bank before leaving.
You need to declare all alcohol over the limit. Often declaring is a good idea as the queue can be shorter & maybe you'll just be waved through - but have, say, $10 cash for "duty" just in case.
After paying for accommodation $100 per person per day should be ample.
Enjoy.
