I think only Australia has the stupid 25,30,40,50,and now 25+1 packets which were all introduced to avoid higher prices in the form of government Tax! Other countries only do more than 20 per pack for occasions like Christmas 100 packs or wedding table packs.
When I return to Australia next trip I will bring back more than 50 and declare them. If you "declare" them you only need to hand over 7.5 packs and keep your 2.5 packs (50 cigarettes)but only if you are requested to do so lol
The rule for tobacco is the exact same as "any other" duty free allowance,fail to declare the over allowance and you "may" be liable to pay duty on the entire amount, including "your duty free allowance" or choose to give them all up to be returned within 12 weeks on your departure from Australia or destroyed,this includes booze jewelry CDs DVDs electrical item and branded clothing regardless of its true or"Fake" nature from Bali lol
Declare your over duty free amount of 200 or 250 carton and walk away with them scott free as they are not deemed a commercial quantity.
This of course will be tested by over Zeus Australian Customs employees at first and until they realize how much extra paper work is involved for them when a traveler decides to give up there "Declared" smokes instead of paying the duty demanded lol
Way too many anti smoking campaigners think this is a personal attack on individual smokers for the better good of all? The only reason it has been introduced is to stop the recent rampant tobacco smuggling and keep the anti smoking soft CX,s happy as a side bonus.
I urge all smokers to arrive back in Australia with a full carton and declare their excess, this will lengthen the customs queues for those with other declared items :)lol
