We usually take 6 bottles in our checked luggage and buy 3 bottles of champagne duty free so total of 9 bottles between 2 people. We generally pay $40 - $50 in duty. We always declare it. Last trip they asked for $500 in duty, but hubby had a bit of a chuckle and said no $40 and the customs officer said ok.
We only take wine/champange but no spirits.
I generally buy the wine whilst it is on sale for around $10-$12 a per bottle and take that. That way if they confiscate we don't loose too much money.
