I did this trip a couple of months ago. We stopped at my friend's home in Tabanan on the way and visited with his family, then up to Batukaru to visit the temple, which is so serene and just gorgeous. Then on to Jatiluwih. I will say that, on the way, I was wondering if it was going to be worth it since the road is just horrible - narrow, winding, potholed etc. But the view is breathtaking. None of the photos I took could do it justice - and family were impressed with the pics when I got home. Stopped for lunch at the restaurant on the corner where most people stop for the view - think it's called Billy's Terrace (same Billy as in Garlic Lane Billy's). There's plenty of other smaller warungs along the road as well.
Picked up from Kuta at around 9am-ish and back home early afternoon.
You could easily add in the Butterfly park or an eco-tourism/coffee plantation stop along the way if you wanted.
