It is not the motorbikes Jillie, it is the riders! Whether or not it applies to this poor chap, as an Aussie having lived here for many years in Bali and I also use a motorbike I am still amazed at the number of Westerners (many of them Australians) who think they can ride a motor bike (often for the very first time) wearing shorts and maybe singlets (skin rips easily upon contact with asphalt), often under the influence (and late at night) and sometimes even with a beer in hand, driving like idiots weaving and shrieking through traffic AND expecting to get safely to where ever they are going. It is a huge problem. Then again many Indonesian bike riders are just as mad on the road but without the alcohol. Be aware of the dangers!
