I have been to some VERY VERY expensive locals houses. I have also gone out for meals with a very good Indonesian friend, that made me shuder when I saw the price. She could buy and sell me ten times over.
I do agree with what CBB says, like Sherbert says, it strikes me as patronizing and insulting to give people I barely know gifts of used clothing etc.
I do bring things over, but I have seen enough of Indonesia to know that Bali is the land of milk and honey for most Indonesians.
That is my two cents worth.
