Once I went to a supermarket in Semarang, Java. As I pushed a trolley along the aisle, I would say things like "soap", "toothpaste" etc and the shop assistant accompanying me would dutifully take the items off the shelf and put it in my trolley.
The concept of the supermarket had travelled to Indonesia, but not the concept of cutting back on numbers of shop assistants.
