Many people on here prefer cash. I personally use ATMs.
Just so you know though, the ATMs will give you rupiah notes, not Australian currency. So there's no need to 'get cash from the atm & then go exchange".
It can also depend on your financial institution. Mine doesn't charge any overseas ATM withdrawal fees, so I don't have to factor that into the cost. The rate they give me is also within Rp100-200 of the rate given by reliable money changers. There are a couple of options around for no fees on withdrawals (NAB has one account that has this).
On the other hand, I've known of people to be ripped off Rp300,000 on a $100 exchange from a dodgy money changer.
I just find ATMs to be much easier.
